Modern classic car insurance

Specialist cover to protect your modern classic.

About our modern classic car insurance

Your 1990s hot hatch or early 2000s performance car may not qualify for traditional classic insurance yet, but it’s far more than an everyday modern vehicle. It needs insurance that reflects its condition, originality and growing status. Many models from this era are becoming increasingly collectable, with values rising as well‑kept examples become harder to find.

At Abbeyfields Insurance, we specialise in arranging tailored cover for classic cars between 15 and 40 years old. With decades of experience in the specialist car insurance market, we’ll build your cover around how you use your modern classic, with protection that respects the care you put into maintaining it.

Why do you need modern classic car insurance?

Our modern classic car insurance is perfect for those special cars from the late 90s and early 2000s that are starting their journey towards classic status. We’re talking about survivors from the turbo era, the last naturally aspirated performance cars and those well-preserved examples of everyday favourites that are becoming increasingly rare on our roads.

Without specialist cover, you might be paying too much for insurance that doesn’t adequately protect your vehicle.

Whether you take it for the occasional weekend drive or show it off at owners’ events or rallies, we can arrange cover that protects your car against accidents, loss or damage, with premiums that reflect how you use it.

What our modern classic car insurance includes

With decades of experience in insuring classic cars from all eras, we understand this unique market. We underwrite policies on behalf of the UK’s leading specialist insurance companies, and our admin fees are among the lowest on the market. So, whether you own a first-generation Audi R8, a limited-edition British model or a future classic Japanese performance car, we can help you protect it. Your policy can include:

You can insure your vehicle at an agreed value at no extra cost and update it whenever you need to. If it’s written off after an accident, you’ll receive that pre‑agreed settlement, minus your policy excess. And if your vehicle needs work after a claim, you can choose your own specialist repairer to ensure it’s returned to its pre‑claim condition.

Modern classics are cars that have the character, desirability and growing collectability of older vehicles, but might not have reached the age required for traditional classic car insurance.

Many insurers set strict minimum ages before they’ll accept a vehicle onto their classic car schemes. These vary between insurers but often range between 20 and 40 years.

At Abbeyfields, we can accommodate these age requirements and offer specialist cover for the cars that sit between what’s viewed as ‘classic’ and ‘modern’.

No. Once a vehicle reaches a certain age, it doesn’t automatically qualify as a classic car. Manufacturers produce millions of models due to demand, many of which may never attain collectable or classic car status.

There are four key areas which help us determine whether a model will become a modern classic before moving to full classic car status as it ages:

  • Rare and limited manufacturing
  • Iconic or prestigious marque history
  • Sports and performance
  • Nostalgia

Marques like Ferrari or Porsche are well known for their iconic history. TVR and Morgan are known for limited manufacturing. Some classic cars are revived with modern manufacturing, such as the Fiat 124 Spider and the Alpine Renault. All these examples are destined for modern, and then full, classic car status.
