Your classic car might come out for weekend drives, make the occasional trip to a show or be waiting for you to finish a restoration. So, when choosing or renewing your classic car insurance, consider how you use your car, its condition and value and the protection you need.
Our classic car insurance offers features designed around these needs, from agreeing your car’s value to choosing a repairer.
At Abbeyfields, our team of specialist insurance brokers will help you understand which features suit your circumstances and what they add to your policy. Here are some of the most important optional features to look for.
Agreed value insurance
With agreed value cover, your car’s value is confirmed in advance. Then, if it’s written off or stolen and not recovered, your settlement will be based on that figure, subject to your excess and policy terms.
You can ask us to agree your car’s value at no extra cost where appropriate. We’ll need six photographs to assess it. You should review the figure as your car’s condition or market value changes so your cover stays up to date.
Limited mileage options
If you drive your classic only occasionally, a limited-mileage policy could reduce your premium. Choose an allowance that comfortably covers your plans, including longer trips.
Our mileage options start at 500 miles a year, with higher allowances available. We’ll help you choose the most suitable option.
Choice of specialist repairer
You may already have a workshop you trust with your classic. We can arrange cover that lets you choose a specialist who understands the car and the repairs it needs.
If you need to claim, speak to us before commissioning repairs so the insurer can approve the work and costs.
Cover for classic car shows and rallies
You might take your classic to shows or local meetups. We can arrange cover for attending shows and non-competitive rallies. For most of our policies, this is included as standard.
European touring cover
Planning a trip across the Channel? Our classic car policies include up to 90 days of European travel as standard, whether you’re taking your car on holiday or heading to a show abroad. You don’t need to notify us before you go.
Your policy documents explain which countries are covered and the terms that apply. If you’re unsure whether your itinerary falls within that cover, we’ll be happy to check.
Breakdown cover and recovery
You can add breakdown assistance and recovery for journeys in the UK and Europe. This provides help with mechanical or electrical breakdowns, flat batteries, punctures and keys lost or locked inside your car.
The package covers roadside call-out and home start to try to get you moving again. If your car can’t be repaired at the roadside, it covers transport to the nearest repairer. If that repairer can’t fix it the same day, recovery can take you, your car and your passengers to a destination of your choice, subject to the policy terms.
Multi-car insurance
If you own more than one vehicle, multi-car insurance can bring your classics and everyday cars together under one policy with one renewal date. Each vehicle will still have its own cover, tailored to how you use it.
With Abbeyfields, you’ll receive the full multi-car discount from day one, while your other vehicles can join as their existing policies expire.
Laid-up insurance for storage and restoration
A car that’s off the road can still suffer damage. Laid-up cover can protect a vehicle in storage or whilst undergoing restoration against fire, theft, storm and accidental damage.
Tell us where you keep the car and what work you’re planning. We’ll explain the protection available and any policy conditions. Before you start driving it again, contact us to arrange suitable road cover, as no third-party liability is included.
Optional motor legal expenses
After an accident that wasn’t your fault, you may need help recovering your excess and lost earnings, or claiming compensation for an injury. If you’ve added motor legal expenses to your policy, this cover can pay the legal costs of pursuing those claims. Our policies can include up to £100,000 of legal assistance, subject to the terms and a reasonable prospect of success.
Find classic car cover that suits you
You don’t need every available extra to protect your classic car properly. You need a policy that covers how you use it, with the benefits that matter to you.
So, tell us about your car and your plans for it, whether that means regular outings, a European tour or time off the road. We have access to specialist insurers that don’t sell directly to the public, and we’ll use our experience and expertise to recommend suitable cover at a competitive price. We’ll also explain the excesses, optional benefits and administration fees so you know what you’re paying for. Get in touch for a quote or call us on 0121 655 3420, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. We’ll be happy to talk you through your options.
